Post Operative Care Plan for Vasectomy

General Post Operative Care
To reduce the risk of post-operative complications you should carefully read and follow these instructions.
You will need to have a check-up 1 week after the procedure, either with your own doctor or at this clinic to have your sutures removed.
Underwear
Supportive underwear should be worn at all times. NOT boxer shorts
Healthy Lifestyle
Make sure you have adequate rest for the next few days and use ice packs under the scrotum to decrease the risk of swelling. You may resume normal activity within 24 hours but avoid HEAVY LIFTING, BIKE RIDING and VIGOROUS EXERCISE or SPORT for 2 WEEKS. Avoid alcohol and have a healthy diet.
Temperature
If you develop a temperature over 37.5 contact the clinic or you doctor, as you may need a course of antibiotics
Pain
Paracetamol or Panadeine and an ice pack will usually bring relief. DO NOT TAKE any medication that contains aspirin. IF YOU HAVE SEVERE PAIN YOU SHOULD CONTACT THE CLINIC
Anaesthesia
For the next 24 Hours you must not

Drive a motor vehicle

Operate machinery
-
Consume alcohol
-
Consume any drugs not prescribed for you

Sign any important documents
-
Do anything that requires fine decision making skills
Future Contraception
You MUST NOT have sex without additional contraceptive protection until 3 negative sperm counts have been received
Sperm Count
Three consecutive sperm counts are necessary to confirm sterility. These specimens are collected at 4 weeks, 6 weeks and 12 weeks after your procedure.
If you do not follow these discharge instructions and you do not use alternative contraception until 3 negative sperm counts have been received we cannot and will not be held responsible for any unplanned pregn
